The conference comes at a time when Canada is months away from legalization and the U.S. is increasingly gesturing toward market liberalization.
Commenting on the state of the North American cannabis market, the Arcview Group's CEO and Co-Founder, Troy Dayton, attributed growth trends to the legislation that has already been changed.
"This market's growing at about a 27 percent compound annual growth rate in North America," he said. "That's about a $10 billion USD market today, growing to about a $24 billion USD market. Most of that is not from new laws changing, this is from laws that have already changed. So, when you start looking at what's going to change in the next few years you will see that impact on the market out into 2022, 2023, 2024..."
Internationally, Dayton forecasts slower overall growth, but notes that many markets won't be stifled by U.S. style federalism when it comes to legislation.
"When you look at the global market, we're predicting that it's going to be about a $57 billion USD legal market in the next 10 years," he said. "So it's going to move a little slower but when it changes you don't have the state-federal conflict."
He also noted, "What's happening in Germany is very interesting. They are going to have medical cannabis covered by insurance. Cannabis is actually going to be on the same playing field as pharmaceuticals."
He also points out Agtech will be a huge opportunity in the sector.
